Being seen on Halloween

Halloween is this Sunday. We'll still be on Daylight Saving Time for another week, but the days are growing shorter and there will be plenty of children out after dark. On Thursday and Friday, the Maryland State Highway Administration will again be offering Vests for Visibility. The highway agency lends reflective safety vests to parents or guardians for free, so they can be placed over children's Halloween costumes.

Metro to stay open for Redskins

Metrorail will operate for an additional hour on Sunday night to accommodate fans attending the Washington Redskins game at FedEx Field. The Redskins will take on the Indianpolis Colts in a game that is scheduled for kickoff at 8:20 p.m. and will be aired on NBC. Metro said the Redskins have paid to keep the system open an extra hour, which means the rail lines will close at 1 a.m. instead of midnight, assuming the game doesn't go into overtime. However, trains will be available to transport passengers if that does happen, Metro said.

Looking down Third Street toward Pennsylvania Tuesday night. (Michael D. Bolden/The Washington Post) I am a "Transformers" fan. I don't collect action figures or watch the cartoons, but I was enthralled by the first movie. I've seen it countless times. I've found myself 30 minutes into watching it on HBO Latino before realizing it was dubbed in Spanish, which I do not speak. Let's chalk it up to a fascination I've long had with sports cars and heavy equipment (one day I will own an articulated dump truck!). So, armed with my curiosity and this appreciation, I headed down to the set about 7:45 Tuesday night to assess the situation for myself. There are parking restrictions and road closures all around the Mall. And traffic seemed light. I parked on Sixth Street SW in front of the Holiday Inn and walked to the Mall.

When to run extra trains?

Many thousands of people enjoyed Saturday's annual book festival on the National Mall, but some didn't have such a great time getting there and wondered why there wasn't more transit service. Dear Dr. Gridlock: I was very disappointed in Metro's performance on Saturday. When a Nationals game is on (stadium capacity 41,000), Metro will run extra trains. But when 130,000 people were expected on the Mall for the National Book Festival, Metro did not seem to be running any extra trains.

Weekend closings for triathlon

The event includes a swim in the Potomac, a bike ride through central Washington and a run near the National Mall ending by the Tidal Basin. SoberRide still needs funds for Fourth

Strasburg, Metro set records
