District’s Douglas loses at U.S. Olympic women’s boxing trials, but Olympic hopes remain alive

Tyrieshia Douglas, a District native who lives in Baltimore, lost in the semifinals of the inaugural U.S. Olympic women’s boxing trials in Airway Heights, Wash., late Tuesday night, but remains alive in her quest for an Olympic spot.

Douglas fell, 20-15 to Christina Cruz of New York in the flyweight division, pushing her into the losers’ bracket of the weeklong trials. The loss proved especially disappointing for Douglas because she led by a point entering the final round, where she was outscored 11-5.

In other news, the District’s Asia Stevenson won her challengers’ bracket bout in a walkover over Patricia Manuel of Long Beach, Calif., and Franchon Crews of Baltimore won on a medical disqualification of Dara Shen of Alexandria. Shen was eliminated from the trials.

Bouts continue Wednesday night. Olympic spots will be decided on Saturday and Sunday.
