Super Bowl Smackdown III: Pigs or the wings?

The Meat Face-off of 2009. (Dayna Smith for The Washington Post)

The No. 1 food consumed during the Super Bowl is, believe it or not, vegetables. So what did Joe and Bonnie decide to make for Smackdown III in 2009? Meats, and more of them.

Food Editor Joe Yonan prepared Hands-Down Best Chicken Wings, a simple recipe for those oven-roasted bird parts, while Deputy Food Editor Bonnie Benwick made Grown-Up Sausage Bites with the help of chef and charcuterie whiz Jamie Stachowski. Bonnie's snacks riff smartly on that kids' favorite, pigs in a blanket, complete with a homemade Guinness-and-cocoa-powder dough wrapped around Stachowski's kielbasa sausage.

So guess who won this Smackdown? The wings in a landslide, claiming 83 percent of the votes.

Geez, when it comes to wings, people have a herd mentality.

The voting for SD III has been over for, well, close to two years now. But you can still vindicate Bonnie and Jamie by providing them a little love in the comment section below. Or just by baking these meaty little rounds. It's time to give those wings the boot. Right, Joe?
