Bruno Mars, Russell Brand pay tribute to Amy Winehouse at VMAs (Video)

Bruno Mars, Russell Brand and Tony Bennett paid tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Brand, who penned an emotional tribute to his friend after her death, spoke about the singer’s struggles with addiction as well as her talent. (Actually, at first he described her as “daft,” but he got more complimentary as the tribute progressed.)

Bennett then followed Brand by introducing new footage of him and Winehouse recording the duet “Body and Soul” in London. In the brief video clip, Winehouse looked and sounded great, far better than she did during that much publicized, awful gig in Belgrade back in June.

Just when the tribute threatened to descend into sad territory, Mars hailed the late singer in joyous fashion with his performance of her song “Valerie.”

“Say Amy / Say Amy / I love you, darling,” he sang toward the end of his cover version. “We’ll miss you baby.”

Watch Mars remember Winehouse in the performance below.
