Numerous European bands are canceling upcoming shows in the United States due to a major volcanic eruption in Iceland that has flooded the atmosphere with ash and grounded most flights out of Europe. AP is reporting that the volcano is causing flight cancellations on a scale not seen since the 2001 terrorist attacks.
UK band The Cribs were scheduled to play the Coachella festival in California this Friday but were forced to cancel as ash, hunks of rock and volcanic glass drift south and east across some of the busiest airspace in the world. Frightened Rabbit is waiting to see if they have to cancel their Coachella gig, but it ain't looking good -- have you seen this volcano? Welsh group Los Campesinos! canceled their gig at SUNY Purchase's Culture Shock festival in upstate New York.
With Coachella scheduled to kick off on Friday, founder Paul Tollett told the Wall Street Journal, "We have 135 bands on the bill. Our headliners are fine. But there's maybe a dozen bands in question."
Experts say the last time the world saw an eruption from this volcano, named Eyjafjallajokull, the dramatic event lasted more than a year. That was of course in 1821, before commercial airliners criss-crossed the sky carrying indie rock bands from festival to festival.
