Really quick spin: Gordo Brega, "M.W.A."

By Sarah Godfrey

Spanglish-spitting, Bronx-born rapper Gordo Brega has released his long-awaited debut album "M.W.A," (available today at Studio43.com), a collection of complex rhymes -- in both English and Spanish -- focused on partying, street life, and D.C. flag-waving.

"Just Like Go-Go" uses a line from Young Jeezy's "Circulate" ("They love me out in D.C./Just like go-go") for its hook, with Brega using the verses to explain how he has won over D.C. rap fans. "Paquiao" is the requisite weed track, complete with squealing West Coast production elements, circa 1992 Dr. Dre. "Da 1" feat. Mz Mimz is a sonic ringer for Slaughterhouse's "The One," but it turns out the one Brega has been waiting for isn't a woman, but Brega himself. "The Afro-Latino dream/Without a doubt, yeah I'm the rapper with clout/All the trappers rap about," he rhymes.

But on "Something New" feat. AB the Producer, Brega does concede that DMV hip-hop success is nothing without someone to share it with. Crafted around a Kelis-era Neptunes inspired beat, the track has Brega outlining the kind of girl he wants, while name-checking the heroes of his adopted city, including the Redskins and Chuck Brown.
