A weekly playlist for the listener with a one-track mind...

Red Hot Chili Peppers: “The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie”

Like Lady Gaga and Chromeo, the band openly longs for the ’80s on this astonishingly tight track from its upcoming 10th disc. In a display of either forward-mindedness or really bad judgment, Kreayshawn has been allowed to direct the video.

DOOM/STARKS: “Victory Laps” (Madvillainz remix)

This long-gestating collaboration between masked rapper MF DOOM and Ghostface Killah, in the offing since the mid-2000s, won’t be released until the end of the month. The track hasn’t leaked yet, but it’s so hotly anticipated that its remix (With radio tags! From a cassette tape!) is already blowing up on the Internet.

Wooden Shjips: “Lazy Bones”

Psych-rockers the Shjips (pronounced “shyips”) recall the Doors circa 1970 on this heavy-hitting new track.

Nikki Jean featuring Lupe Fiasco and Black Thought: “Million Star Motel”

A parallel universe’s offspring of Carole King and Janelle Monae, Jean sang on Fiasco’s hit “Hip-Hop Saved My Life.” On this retro ballad from her just-out solo debut, he returns the favor.

The Avett Brothers: “The Once and Future Carpenter”

In the video clip that accompanies this spectacular, spectacularly sad new song, the Avetts discuss wanting to make a song that didn’t sound like all their other songs. That said, this song sounds pretty much like all their other songs.
