Soulja Boy: “The Last Crown”
As you might expect, Soulja’s new mix tape doesn’t stint on Pro Tools (which even get a shout-out on the last song), but he’s never used them to better effect than on this brooding opium trip of a title track.
Thundercat: “Daylight” (co-produced by Flying Lotus)
The retro-futuristic bassist’s mind-expanding new track is one of many highlights from his soul-meets-techno-meets-jazz-fusion-in-1977 debut, “The Golden Age of Apocalypse.”
Robin Hannibal: “Plug Research Podcast #12”
The Danish up-and-comer, not unlike James Blake in his melding of lounge R&B and electro, collates this outrageously good label sampler with contributions from Boom Clap Bachelors, Hannibal’s group Quadron and his own archives.
Main Attrakionz featuring ASAP Rocky: “Take One”
The rappers join forces with the suddenly hot pairing of New York MC Rocky and producer Clams Casino for this understated banger.
Louise Burns: “Drop Names Not Bombs”
A survivor of long-ago Canadian girl group Lillix, Burns specializes in Ronettes-like pop tracks with a shoegaze overlay. Her Polaris Prize-nominated debut, “Mellow Drama,” drops stateside today
