The University of Maryland is the lead story in today's edition of Inside Higher Ed, with an account of a professor who may have dragged his university into a California labor dispute with a legal opinion written on U-Md. letterhead.
Fred Feinstein, listed on the university web site as a lecturer in the School of Public Policy, penned a legal opinion that suggested California health care workers who left the Service Employees International Union "could receive "less favorable" benefits if they left SEIU for another union," according to the story. He wrote it as a paid consultant for the union. The opinion was then "photocopied and used by SEIU as campaign literature, urging workers to stay on as members," the story says.
William Powers, executive dean of Maryland's School of Public Policy, told Inside Higher Ed that Feinstein had violated university policy with the letter. Feinstein told the publication the fact he was a paid consultant was "a matter of public record."
