An Anne Arundel County police lieutenant Thursday was arrested on charges that he exchanged sexually explicit photos with a teenage girl, federal authorities said.
James Cifala, 47, of Edgewater, was charged with attempting to receive child pornography. He has been with the Anne Arundel police department for 27 years.
According to police and court records, the investigation began in September 2009 when the parents of a teenage girl told the FBI their daughter was having a sexual relationship with an adult man.
Investigators found hundreds of sexually explicit text messages that the teenager exchanged with "Johnny," who was determined to be Cifala, according to court papers.
The teenager also sent nude photos of her self to Cifala at his request, a practice that is known as "sexting."
Prosecutors allege that there were more than 1,300 contacts between Cifala's cellular telephone and the girl's cellular telephone over just three weeks in the summer of 2009.
Federal authorities said Anne Arundel police assisted in the investigation. Cifala was arrested Wednesday night at the county police station.
