A Harwood man has been charged with attempted murder after he drove his truck into several police vehicles as officers tried to apprehend him on Jan. 19, Anne Arundel County Police said Thursday.
Officers responded to a report of family violence in the 3600 block of Solomons Island Road in Harwood on Jan. 18 at approximately 9:09 p.m., police said. A man, identified by police as William R. Leapley Jr., 27, had allegedly assaulted a family member and fled the scene.
When officers returned to the the residence on Jan. 19 around 6:46 a.m., according to police, Leapley fled in a Ford F-150 pick-up truck.
According to police, Leapley drove his truck into an unoccupied patrol car; he then passed two others, turning back to hit one, which was occupied by an officer. As he drove down Route 2 South, police said, Leapley passed a third patrol car and turned back to hit that one twice, forcing it into oncoming traffic.
An officer responding to that incident in a fourth car hit Leapley's truck, police said, and a citizen's vehicle was damaged in that crash. "There was a calculated effect to do harm to these officers and put their lives in jeopardy," said Officer Justin Mulcahy, a county police spokesman.
Leapley was eventually caught shortly before 7 a.m.
Three officers were taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center after the incident and have since been released.
Leapley was charged with four counts of attempted murder, attempted manslaughter by motor vehicle, first degree assault, second degree assault, second degree assault of a law enforcement officer and reckless endangerment, along with related traffic offenses, Anne Arundel County Police said.
