Ahh, the Facebook "Status" line, where the gazillion Facebookers post their latest political insight, mood, pet action or hilarious YouTube link. Or in the unexpected case of one Fairfax County woman, the announcement that she was pregnant.
Which was news to the woman. She wasn't. Someone had hacked into her account.
Fairfax County police are now investigating who might have posted the dastardly status update about a Springfield woman, as well as send out insulting e-mails from her Hotmail account to her friends and cancelling all her classes at Northern Virginia Community College.
According to a search warrant filed last week in Fairfax Circuit Court, Detective Brooke D. Ware interviewed the victim, then used court orders to determine where the Hotmail hacking might have come from. The trail led to a former classmate of the victim's at Robert E. Lee High School, and both the female suspect and the victim "had a strained personal relationship resulting from disputes over a mutual male interest," Ware wrote.
If you hack into someone's Facebook account and post their status as "pregnant," I'm guessing they've gone beyond "strained."
No charges have been filed yet, while police search the hard drives of the third-party who may have done the actual hacking, and we are withholding the names involved to protect the chaste.
