David A. Eichelberger Jr., a former chief of police for the Prince George's County town of Morningside, pleaded guilty Friday to a gun and theft charge.
Eichelberger, 30, of Accokeek, pleaded guilty to the illegal sale and transfer of a regulated firearm and theft over $500.
Eichelberger admitted he illegally sold a Glock handgun that belonged to the town of Morningside, which is near Andrews Air Force Base. Eichelberger, who was a patrol officer when the illegal sale occurred, sold the weapon from the trunk of his patrol car, Prince George's prosecutors said.
Eichelberger was indicted by a county grand jury in November.
He was dismissed from his job as chief, and from the police force, in October following the airing of local TV news reports that he was under investigation for stealing and illegally selling weapons.
Eichelberger is scheduled to be sentenced March 19.
