Less crime in 2010: FBI

Crime continues to decrease across the country, according to preliminary data released by the FBI Monday morning.

For the first six months of the year, violent crime dropped by 6.2 percent and property crime dipped by 2.8 percent compared with the first half of 2009, according to the FBI's report.

The report is based on information from more than 12,000 law enforcement agencies.

From January to June, robbery fell 10.7 percent, murder was down 7.1 percent, forcible rape declined 6.2 percent, and aggravated assault decreased 3.9 percent.

The biggest drop in violence -- 8.3 percent -- was in cities with populations of 500,000 to 999,999.

For property crime, motor vehicle theft dropped 9.7 percent, larceny fell 2.3 percent, and burglary decreased 1.4 percent.
