An off-duty Prince George's County police officer narrowly escaped injury early Thursday morning when he exchanged gunfire at close range with a man who was trying to rob him in Greenbelt, authorities said.
A shot fired by the would-be robber went through the officer's jacket, police said, but the officer was not injured.
The incident occurred around 12:30 when the officer was getting out of his car in an apartment complex in the 8500 block of Greenbelt Road.
The officer, who was in plain clothes, was approached by a man who tried to rob him, police said.
The suspect fired a shot at close range, and the officer returned fire, police said.
The would-be robber ran away. Police were canvassing the area looking for a suspect, and also checking area hospitals in case the attacker was wounded, authorities said.
