A man who was walking his broken scooter across the Key Bridge late Sunday night was fatally hit by an SUV that sped from the scene, D.C. police said.
A police officer who responded to the crash was also struck and injured by a different car, police said. The driver who hit the officer was charged with driving under the influence.
When the officer was struck, just before midnight, his head hit the pavement, police said. He was being evaluated Monday morning at an area hospital, and was listed in stable condition. "We think he's going to be just fine," said Michael Reese, commander of the 2nd District.
According to one report, the officer, a nine-year veteran, was putting flares down on the road as he was struck.
Police have not yet released the name of the pedestrian with the scooter who died.
Officers are looking for the vehicle that hit him, described as a Mercury SUV.
It happened at about 10:30 p.m. as the man was walking from Georgetown into Arlington. Police believe his scooter broke down on the bridge, causing him to walk it in a lane of traffic.
