St. Louis fugitive surrenders in Md.

A St. Louis man suspected by Illinois State Police of leading a local officer on a fatal chase has turned himself in to authorities in Maryland.

Illinois State Police said Friday that the man walked into a Howard County Police Department station and surrendered.

They say the pickup he drove to the station matched one that drove away from a gas station in Cowden on Tuesday without paying for about $100 of diesel.

Cowden Mayor Lorne Barnes says 35-year-old officer Jeremy Hubbard chased the truck and crashed. Hubbard, who lived in nearby Effingham, died late Tuesday.

State Police say the man is in Maryland awaiting extradition. He has not been charged.
