The good news: Friday’s devastating storm won’t have a major impact on the area’s biggest Fourth of July events, including a Capitol Fourth on the Mall, and the celebration at Mount Vernon.
The bad news: The celebrations in harder-hit suburbs are being affected, including Montgomery County, where celebrations in Kensington, Rockville and South Germantown were canceled Monday afternoon as officials grappled with diverting resources to recovery efforts. Gaithersburg also announced Monday that it was canceling its annual fireworks celebration at Montgomery County Fairgrounds.

Note, as of about 5:30, the Park Service was tweeting that it has closed the area around the WWII Memorial as a safety precaution.
A Capitol Fourth concert featuring Matthew Broderick, the National Symphony Orchestra, Apolo Anton Ohno, John Williams and Josh Turner will go on as planned on July 4th on the Capitol grounds. In addition, the popular Capitol Fourth rehearsal, set for Tuesday, is also scheduled to go on as planned.
Alexandria’s celebration, which includes children's activities, exhibits, musical performances, a birthday cake and fireworks at dusk on July 7th at Oronoco Bay Park, will go on as planned.
In Montgomery County, two July 4 events were canceled Monday because of the strain they would place on the county’s emergency services; Germantown’s fireworks event Germantown Glory at South Germantown Recreational Park will no longer be taking place; Mid-County Sparkles , the event serving Wheaton and Kensington, has also been canceled.
Update 12:41 July 4:The City of Falls Church’s celebration at George Mason High School is on and will include fireworks. Music begins at 7 p.m., and fireworks are at 9:20 p.m.
Also on is Howard County’s fireworks celebration at Columbia’s Lake Kittamaqundi. Events begin at 5 p.m. and fireworks will be at dusk.
The celebration at Arlington ’s Long Bridge Park will go on as planned with vendors and family-friendly events.
The Bowie Baysox offices are closed Monday due to the power outage, but the July 4 game versus the Harrisburg Senators and post-game fireworks are set to go on as planned.
Chevy Chase ’s celebration, which includes a parade that ends at Oliver Street Park with family-friendly activities, will go on as scheduled.
College Park Fireworks Spectacular! will feature a concert by the Hubcaps and will go on as planned.
Fort Meade’s celebration includes children's rides and games start at noon. New Monopoly performs from 5:30 until fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. Everything will go on as scheduled.
The day-long Fredericksburg Heritage Festival --which includes a 5K, parade and fireworks--will go on as planned.
July 4 Fanfare in Greenbelt , featuring the Greenbelt Concert Band and a community drum circle, will go on as planned.
Great Falls Village Centre Independence Day Baby Parade will go on as planned on July 4th from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The fireworks will be postponed, however, to July 14 from 6 p.m.-9:30 p.m. at Turner Park.
Activities including music by the Darby Brothers at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. will go on as scheduled as part of Herndon’s festivities.
The Charles County Fairgrounds July Fourth Celebration in La Plata is scheduled to go on as planned.
Saturday’s events at Granville Gude Park in Laurel , including a parade, horseshoe contest and classic car show start at 11 a.m.; Hotdog eating contest at 2 p.m; the grand opening with flag raising and national anthem sung by Christina Landis at 3:15 p.m; Oracle performances at 5:15 and 7:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:15 p.m., are on as scheduled.
The Celebrate America! festival in Manassas , which includes hayrides, live music and fireworks at 9:15 p.m., is scheduled to take place as planned from 2 to 10 p.m. on July Fourth at the Manassas Museum. The events can be canceled in the event of inclement weather, however, so visit www.visitmanassas.org for updates.
McLean is waiting until tomorrow to determine whether or not to cancel, postpone or go on with its fireworks.
An American Celebration at Mount Vernon, complete with day-time fireworks, will go on as planned.
That Independent Feeling! Concert in St. Mary’s City , featuring Jeffrey Silberschlag and the Chesapeake Orchestra with jazz vocalist Hilary Kole at 8 p.m., and a post-concert fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., will go on as scheduled.
The city of Rockville announced late Monday that its Rockville Independence Day Celebration had been canceled.
Takoma Park's festivities, featuring a parade at 10 a.m., Wiffle Ball tournament at 2:30 p.m., concert at 7 p.m. and fireworks at 9:30 p.m., will go on as scheduled. A previously scheduled barbeque has been canceled. Update: Bathrooms will be available at Takoma Park Middle School.
(The bathroom situation is tricky: There will be no access to the facilities at Takoma Park Middle School. Plan accordingly.)
The Vienna Fourth of July Celebration, including games, rides, arts and crafts vendors and chili cook off will take place as planned from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Vienna Community Center; a fireworks celebration beginning at 7 p.m. will also go on as planned with fireworks at 9:15 p.m. at Southside Park.
