The Clash frontman was punk’s greatest and most versatile singer and one of its finest songwriters, so it’s no wonder that he’s still remembered around the world, even by those too young to remember “London Calling” the first time around.
Two Washington bars have a tradition of honoring Strummer on Dec. 22. The Passenger celebrates Joe Strummer Day by playing nothing but the Clash and Strummer’s work with the Mescalaros from open to close, and serving up special cocktails, including the Joe Strummer (Scotch, absinthe, ginger beer and lemon peel) for $8.
The Pug, where you’re as likely to hear the Clash as the Pogues on a weekend night, will also play all Strummer all night long, and the bar is marking “St. Joseph’s Day” with a food drive for Martha’s Table. Bring in a can of food for charity, and you’ll get a free shot of whiskey. (Bring multiple cans, and you’ll get even more and better whiskey.) Joe Strummer would approve.
