Farmer Scott Keach, owner of the 2,500-acre Keach Farm, looks at a drought-damaged soybean plant in a field in Henderson, Ky. Rains provided some relief to heat-stressed cities and worried farmers in the Midwest on Tuesday, but reports of failed crops, wildfires and other fallout from the worst U.S. drought in more than 50 years tempered any optimism.

A combination of images shows the extent of surface melt on Greenland's ice sheet on July 8, left, and July 12. Measurements from three satellites showed that on July 8, about 40 percent of the ice sheet had undergone thawing at or near the surface. In just a few days, the melting had dramatically accelerated and an estimated 97 percent of the ice sheet surface had thawed by July 12. In the image, the areas classified as “probable melt” (light pink) correspond to those sites where at least one satellite detected surface melting. The areas classified as “melt” (dark pink) correspond to sites where two or three satellites detected surface melting.

Researcher Silvia Gori works inside the Sant'Orsola monastery in Florence. Archeologists found a skeleton buried inside the monastery that could belong to Lisa Gherardini, the first model of Leonardo da Vinci's “Mona Lisa” painting. Lisa Gherardini was the wife of a silk merchant called Francesco del Giocondo (in fact, Italians refer to the Mona Lisa as the “Gioconda”). According to art historian Giorgio Vasari, del Giocondo commissioned Leonardo to paint a portrait of his wife. Leonardo took about 15 years to complete what was to become one of the most famous paintings in the world. When her husband died Lisa retired to the Sant’Orsola convent, where she died at 63.
