June G. Mayo, White House volunteer

June G. Mayo, 95, who volunteered at the White House for more than 20 years beginning in the early 1980s, died Feb. 5 at her home in Arlington.

The former McLean resident had complications from dementia, said her daughter, Tracy Mayo.

Mrs. Mayo began volunteering in the White House correspondence office after she and her husband settled in McLean following his Navy retirement. During his military career, the couple lived in Moscow, Panama and the former Yugoslavia.

June Marie Gilbert was a Seattle native and studied journalism at the University of Washington.

Her husband, retired Rear Adm. James O. Mayo, died in 2007 after 63 years of marriage. Survivors include her daughter, Tracy Mayo of McLean; a sister; and a grandson.
