Faces of Shiites jailed by the government along with anti-government graffiti are numerous in Sitra, Bahrain. Sitra is a hotbed of Shiite unrest, with regular clashes during nightly protests that end with street blockades and tear gas. The Shiite population, which is about 50 percent of Bahrain, has sustained a campaign of civil unrest in the country starting in 2011. They started by asking for more political freedom but are now advocating to overthrow the monarch of King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa. More than 80 people have died since the beginning of the uprising.
